Woodsticks: Correct Use

Standard

How to correctly use the woodstick
•    Use the tooth pick before brushing (and then brush 2 minutes preferably with the Oral B electric toothbrush, this one has the most positive research!)
•    Use the woodstick at least once every day before going to sleep
•    Have a standard routine, oral hygiene is a ZEN exercise!
•    Observe the woodstick closely: it is triangular. The narrow side is the gum side. Both ends can be used.
•    Upper jaw: the curve in the woodstick points up (as picture on the pack)
•    Lower jaw: the curve in the woodstick points down
•    Always point the tip of the woodstick just above the gumline
•    Always point the tip slightly away from the gum: point it downwards for the teeth in the upper jaw, point it upward for the teeth in the lower jaw
•    Push it in with medium force: stop when it stops, even when the woodstick is not fully visible or feellable on the other side
•    Very motivating: smell your woodstick, this was between your teeth!
•    When the gum starts bleeding after the use of the woodstick: proof that you have gum disease. Now when it is in an early stage, then this bleeding should stop afer 10 days of use of the woodstick in combination with brushing the gumline with the Oral B electric toothbrush (see instructions in the brush manual). If there is still bleeding after 10 days, consult your dentist, you probably need a professional clean or more.
•    We are doing research in New Zealand on the effect of Munuka Honey on infections and gum disease (see: http://www.pictondental.co.nz/Honey-research.html).  For patients with gum disease (periodontitis) we advise to use the woodstick first as above mentioned and then do a second round with having it dipped in Manuka Honey several times.   There are two systems in place that measure the strength of the antibacterial activity in Manuka Honey – the UMF and MGO. UMF is the best guarantee for quality, but MGO will do. UMF 10+ more or less equals MGO 100+ strenght, this is enough for maintenance. Active periodontis is probably better off with UMF 16+ or MGO 250+. Be assured: honey can not create cavities, so enjoy this sweet medicine!
•    If ever one woodsticks breaks (which would rarely happen, but maybe you were distracted…) then it helps to push the broken piece out with a new one. Using a sewing needle might help and there is always your dentist/hygienist. You can leave it for the weekend, but rather no longer.
