Woodsticks: On the hunt for Interdens

Standard

The most readily available product similar to the much appreciated Interdens are the lesser quality Jordon Woodsticks.  I am thinking perhaps Interdens were being made elsewhere by a different company. Or perhaps a product equally as good. So began this hunt. Below are my findings.

Koeisha & Company Cleardent located in Kawachinagano City, in south of Osaka Description of Business Founded in 1917, Koeisha & Company is a fourth-generation manufacturer of toothpicks. The company develops all of its own manufacturing equipment. For 50 years, the company has been exporting its Dental Pick triangular toothpicks for protecting teeth to the northern European market. Only nine companies worldwide produce this toothpick, with Koeisha & Company being the only company in Japan. Taking this opportunity, the company has developed and manufactures its own original dental care products. The Doctor Pick toothpick for cleaning interdental spaces was developed in collaboration with government and academia, taking the conventional round toothpick and processing its tip into a triangular shape. This toothpick is a world first. Other products conceived by the company include: the tongue cleaner, for removing deposits from the tongue safely; the Dental Peeling Sponge for removing colored stains from teeth without damaging them; and special toothbrushes for cleaning molars. Having developed the relevant manufacturing equipment, these products are now on available for purchase. http://youtu.be/rojm49NV_Pk  Koeisha Co Ltd “Cleardent” website     and Facebook page We introduced a production machine from U.S.A. in last years in the Taisho era, and Wemade handmade toothpicks till then and I opened a way and built the basics as the local industry of today’s here to the production with the machine. White birch materials used in nothing came to be utilized for the first time till then. Thereafter, for 80 rest of life, I walked it as a professional maker, and went ahead through a study and the development of the product consistently and reclaimed the export market where it was not thought till then and brought about many new products in the domestic market. As local industry of Kawachinagano, it is taken up by the textbook of the social studies of the third grader of the elementary school, and it is come for a visit every year several schools. Cleardent makes Three types of Toothpick. The following three videos of Cleardent manufacture correspond to these three types. Cleardent has a you tube channel. 1.  Triangular “Japan Pick”  –  “DOCTOR Pick” for teeth. 2.  Triangular “Comb”  – “DENTAL Pick” for teeth. 3.  Round “Cocktail Pick” NOT for teeth, rather for use as a skewer for olives and such. http://youtu.be/aDx_XKScQKc http://youtu.be/pSmTB_of83w http://youtu.be/BN0fc7Oie94 —————————— “Doctor pick” has been developed first in the world under the technical guidance of REC (Ryukoku University Extension Center) to clean the interdental spaces after meals and massage the gum between teeth. “Doctor Pick”is made from white birch with adequate strength and stickness. The sweet material Xylitol is made from white birch too. image1 The interdental space is just like a narrow triangle shape. Removing the plaque and massaging the gum help promote the blood circulation and the prevent gum disease.(This was announced at the study of Dental division of Japan Human Factors held at Tsurumi University on September 1,2001.) Toothpick of triangle shape for interdental cleaning and massaging after meals has evolved into a quite a new Doctor Pick in line with the growing demand for prevention of gum disease. 1. Base of triangle shape fits gently to the interdental space and gives adequate massage to the gum. 2. Scrub off the stain on surface with platula side. 3. Spatula side scrubs off the plaque on the surface especially boundary of teeth and gum

Doctor Pick 180 pieces

Triangular “Japan Pick”  – “DOCTOR Pick” Products or parts description     One end of Doctor Pick is triangular, designed according to the space between teeth. Features     Because of its shape, formed according to the space between teeth, Doctor Pick does not damage the gum or teeth, while effectively removing detritus from the teeth and massaging the gum. Field of use     In addition to general stores and drug stores, Doctor Pick is marketed to hotels and restaurants including fancy Japanese-style restaurants, after being packaged in a paper sleeve with a customer’s name printed on it. ———————————————- Triangular “Comb” – “DENTAL Pick Products or parts description     Our triangular dental picks aren’t just convenient-they’re quite simply the most important tool available for cleaning between the teeth. And they come with a carrying case. Traditional round toothpicks were originally designed for cooking purposes and used for skewering pieces of fruit and other foods. They’re basically for kitchen use, which is why they’re sometimes called “cocktail picks”. Features     And it’s a well-known fact that forcing a big round toothpick in between your teeth can and does injure your sensitive gums. But our dental picks are made triangular so they fit easily in the narrow spaces between your teeth. The two upper edges are designed to scrape away the plaque that gets lodged on the surfaces of your teeth, while the base lightly presses and massages the fleshy part of the gums between your teeth. Field of use     This massaging action promotes blood flow to the gums, which is very important for the prevention of gum disease. The practice has already gained wide acceptance in Europe and the US. You can carry a packet of our dental picks with you wherever you go and use them to care for your teeth after every meal. Dental picks are for the protection of teeth and gums, so find them sold at most pharmacies as well as in the toothbrush aisle of volume retail stores.

“Dental Picks” are the triangular toothpicks developed according to the spaces between teeth. The section of pick is an isosceles triangle ; its two sides will clean the teeth and its base will massage the gums. An occasion uses one three angles of connected toothpicks. The raw materials use the white birch which is raw materials of the xylitol of the sweetener and have you use it in peace. With a case for carrying, it is clean for carrying around at the time of going out and is convenient at all.

pero 3Paro Fresh Sticks provide a refreshing mint flavoring for a pleasing aftertaste. Due to the Paro Fresh Stick’s triangular cross section, paro medicinal picks are ideally, suited for cleaning the tight spaces between teeth and massaging interdental gingival tissues. By moistening the toothpick in saliva before use, it will soften and be more flexible. Made in Switzerland. AND,  a good sign – it has been stamped with a seal of FSC – Forest Stewardship Council – AND not a mention of fluoride, so perhaps the mint is real essential oil of mint and not a substitute. J&J is no longer manufacturing the product. Product now distributed by Revive Personal Products ————- 41tyFrfanxL._SL500_Feedback from Amazon customers who bought what they thought was the original high-quality orangewood product produced under Joihnson & Johnson: I specifically ordered these STIMUDENTS because they were advertised as the “Johnson and Johnson” product, but when I received them they were a product made in China by “Revive Personal Products”. I’d used this brand before and they tended to break, split, or get soggy. THe exterior packaging and wording are almost identical to the J&J packaging, so they LOOK like the real Stimudents. —-

The item pictured and advertised as a genuine Johnson & Johnson product was not a JNJ product. Amazon should not advertise it as Johnson & Johnson. The original product was superior to the product that is being sent to customers who answer the Johnson & Johnson ad.

This product was formerly produced in the US. It now comes from China and it has a rather nasty aftertaste and collapses easily.

StimudentBetween StimudentPk stimudentsOutOfPk Stimudents are simply a very thin wooden toothpick made of orangewood (from an orange tree – a softwood). You can buy them in many drug stores (especially CVS and Walgreens) or super markets.  They work just as well as floss to clean between your teeth. (They can be hard to find, but you can call Johnson & Johnson at 800-526-3967.  Wait until the automatic answering system gives you a choice to go to the oral health section.  Once there you can speak to a representative who can tell you all the stores in your area where they are sold.)  Simply break one off , wet the end by sucking on it, and begin cleaning between each of your teeth just as you would use a toothpick at a restaurant. Notice that the Stimudents have a wedge shaped cross section. The flat edge is placed closest to the gums while the point is pointing toward the edges of the teeth . The Stimudents are pushed as far between the teeth as they will go. You can reach the furthest spaces back in your mouth as I am doing here. At first, you will experience some bleeding and some discomfort because the plaque bacteria have caused a chronic infection in the gums, and like any infected tissue, it hurts when it is touched. However the pain and bleeding subsides within a week or two after you start using them. These little sticks are worth their weight in gold, because they have worked so well to cure so many of my more motivated patients’ chronic periodontal disease.  Since they are disposable, the patient does not have to be near running water to use them.  They frequently use them while commuting to work or watching television. It feels great to use them, especially after the disease clears up, and once patients notice that the bleeding has stopped and their teeth are no longer mobile, they feel good about themselves. Stimudent this is a fairly decent attempt by Natural Dentist to give the people what tey want, including putting out a thick version and a thin Version, to get chinese to package it as Stimudent as in the very good product made of orange wood sold by johnson and johnson   = but it just does not come up to scratch, as these bad review below. 1. The triangular shape.

Designed in the shape of an isosceles triangle, Stim-U-Dent Plaque Removers fit perfectly between your teeth. By placing the base of the triangle against the gum tissue, you can remove plaque from the inner tooth surfaces and massage the gum tissue all in one motion.
2. The tapered point.

The tapered point fits so perfectly between your teeth, no matter how tall or short that space is.  Perfect for dislodging food particles and plaque – keeping you clean and comfortable.
3. The wood.

Made of special wood that creates the ideal texture and flexibility when wet, Stim-U-Dent Plaque Removers squeeze in between teeth and remove sticky plaque before it becomes tartar (the stuff your dental hygienist has to scrape off during your cleanings).  And the wood is biodegradable and comes from managed forests.
4. They stimulate your gums.

Stim-U-Dent Plaque Removers will remove plaque and food from between your teeth, but that’s only the beginning.  The in-and-out motion used also stimulates blood flow to your gum tissue – keeping your gums nourished and healthy.
5. They’re safe.

The flexibility of the wood means Stim-U-Dent Plaque Removers will bend or break if you push too hard – they will never shift or damage your teeth.  (Don’t try that with a conventional wooden toothpick!)

Carbamide peroxide

Most people are familiar with carbamide peroxide since it is the agent most commonly used for bleaching (whitening) the teeth.  The dental profession has recently begun to recommend carbamide peroxide as a means of preventing periodontal disease and tooth decay in patients who are unable to carry out normal oral hygiene measures such as regular brushing and flossing.  For patients like these, rubber trays are fabricated to fit over both the teeth and the gingiva.  The tooth indents in the trays are filled with 10% carbamide peroxide and the patient wears the trays for two hours once a day, or overnight.  The carbamide peroxide breaks down into 3.5% hydrogen peroxide and 6.5% urea when it contacts plaque.  The urea further breaks down into ammonia and carbon dioxide under the action of bacteria.  The hydrogen peroxide kills the plaque bacteria, and the ammonia raises the PH of the plaque neutralizing the acid that causes tooth decay.

  1. I’ve got a box of interdens fine dental massagers right now, just bought at my local chemist, so they still make them. I live in Australia, and here, the interdens product is branded to sensodyne, and have the details of GlaxoSmithKline on the back.
(82 hughes ave Ermington NSW Australia/ 6a Pacific rise, Mt Wellington, Auckland,NZ)
They may not be available in your part of the world but you can probably order some online.

    • Wow, thank you August.
Since writing this post, my research has led me to a factory in norway where the original inteedens were made and the product that they are now putting out is a birchwood stick, exactly rhe same proportions, yet with chemical cocktail of flouride added.

I am looking for a manufacturer who does not add flouride. I think i have found one in japan.

August, having an interdens in your hand, you are the only person who can tell me – is there any mention of the word “flouride” on the packaging.
Hey august, for posterity and hisrory, can you please take 3 photos of your packet – front, back and inside – and a photograph of the chemist shop also if you feel like it – i want to get INTERDENS BACK ON THE MARKET and any conversations that keep alive any interest in a product Is nexeasary for manufacturer to become interested.
Thank you August – how ’bout a picture of you with your pack?
By the way the pack you bought – my bet is that the chemist has a stockpile or the chemist warehouse has a stockpile – because i have been looking casually for several years for a wholesaler.
Any photos or further info- i would appreciate it – ask your chemist. They are usually glad when customers let them know of their interest in a product.
      I really like your name.
I had an ancestor with august as a second name.
      Cheers from marion

what do you think?
