11/16/2004 Health. Healing Cavities. Someone wrote to ask how big the cavities I healed with a better diet over the course of a few years. I’m not sure. The dentist who told me I had 10 cavities said that once they reach the cavity stage like mine were, they won’t ever heal. I showed this to be wrong. In my article on cavities I ask: “How much enamel can be destroyed and still re-grow?” I still don’t know. But cavities take months to several years to form.

I was told that after “the protein matrix” broke down, re-mineralization could not take place. So, I had this vision of a tooth as a protein net filled in by minerals, but this contradicts other things I’ve read that say after the tooth forms, there is no longer any matrix of protein, just mineral.

“Enamel is characterized developmentally by a protein template largely composed of amelogenin, a protein secreted by cells of the epithelium. Amelogenin binds tightly to calcium and — oddly — also to cell surfaces [H+02]. Initially, the cap area is almost all protein, 90% of which is amelogenin [MP00]. As the tooth matures, the protein matrix is gradually degraded until the fully developed hypermineralized condition is reached, with close packing of the enamel structures [D+01].”

Rocks with holes of any size can be filled in if new rock is added, so I’d say if you remove the bacteria and other acid from your teeth and get the right minerals in your saliva, that almost any size of hole can eventually fill in. I’m no dentist or doctor, so this is just my best guess.

The reason to get cavities filled is bacteria can live inside your teeth and they can keep digging and making the situation worse if they have sugar (starch) to eat. You don’t want to get an ugly growth of bacteria in a tooth because it can get into your bloodstream and some types cause heart trouble.

So, what I’d do if you want to heal your cavities is this: tell your dentist that you are quitting sugar, going on a program to rebuild your tooth health with a better diet, and you’d like to know if any of your cavities can be watched to see if they remineralize. If your dentist says no, get a second oppinion. If you have to have them filled, use a laser dentist because the laser will kill the bacteria and you don’t need a shot!

Oh, for remineralization, one thing I’ve been using is the Eco-dent powder. I did NOT use flouride toothpastes or flouridated water or any other kind of flouride at all and I healed 5 cavities. (I’d read that flouride in the wrong dose weakens your teeth.) My experiment paid off for me. Best of luck to you! Here is some good info on rebuilding teeth.

HOW DOES THE BODY FIGHT DENTAL DEMINERALIZATION? To counter demineralization, the body had to solve an interesting problem: If dental minerals are only soluble in acids, how can it create replacement mineral ions in a way that also doesn’t dissolve enamel, as strong stable acids do? When this happens, the mineral ions that are dissolved in it precipitate out as solid mineral ions again – but not necessarily as the original mineral molecules: If a particular mineral ion is near a demineralized portion of the hydroxyapatite crystal that requires that ion, the ion is incorporated into the dental enamel! Though natural remineralization is always taking place, the level of activity varies according to conditions in the mouth.
